new animals arrive at the farm

the isa brown chicks

Well it was a long night for the kids they were so excited about going to pick up the chickens and chicks today. we have bought some isa brown chicks so we will see how many hens we get as they grow they are only 2 weeks old right now. and we picked up 2 hens and a rooster from their breeding stock a year old to bring them to farm life and not a box.

this is billy the rooster
so we picked up a rooster and laying hens so we can try and incubate some chicks from the heritage group and see how we go. but for right now we are all excited as we have our first egg. and it is blue true to the breeds form.

It has been interesting watching the birds who have not been raised outside at all refuse to go outside. but once the rooster was brave enough to jump through the chicken door he has not been back in since except once for  a drink. It is thrilling to see them poking and prodding for bugs and being happy to be just a chicken and enjoy the sun. We hope that the feathers return on the girls and they become more than layers but our great first experience.

this is bella the hen
this is a egg lol no name yet
I have put in the coop 2 dog feeders my father made me for the dogs they seem to be working amazing for the chickens the only thing I am missing is the water container. I do have water in the coop in bowls right now but something less likely to tip would be better yet.I am thinking I may place a order on a few more hens this week as the little chick's grow up they are a pretty breed of bird and the fact they are a heritage bird makes it ever so much more important to have them.
although it is taking everything in my power to not grab the eggs and incubate them myself this is the kids fun so they have a little incubator and not have a egg sitting in there( which most likely) not hatch because it was tossed around so much with the excitement of the first egg. it is such a exciting time around here today I am sure to not get anything else done. I was supposed to go and pick up my lama today but this morning it was so foggy I did not want to drive the highway with a horse trailer so we will arrange for the pick up of our new boy this week. the other horses we have to load to take to my uncles farm down the road to pasture as they need the pasture down and we need more so it works so I will try and get them their today if we have enough time. well that is it form me for right now I have to go and check on the animals and make sure we still have all the chickens in the pen now they have figured out that being outside is fun
